Clean Up Bristol iOS Project

Snap, tag, and upload street issues—small actions that add up to a cleaner city.

Overview

The Clean Up Bristol iOS Project is being developed as a simple, fast, and community-focused tool for reporting environmental issues across the city. The app enables users to capture street-level problems directly through the built-in camera and securely upload them to a central database for analysis.

Once received, each photo is processed through a machine-learning classification system that identifies the type of issue—such as overflowing bins, fly-tipping, food waste scattered by wildlife, or other forms of public-space pollution. This automation significantly reduces manual review time and ensures consistent categorisation.

Persistent waste on streets not only affects the appearance of local neighbourhoods but can also contribute to hygiene risks, encourage rodent activity, and negatively impact nearby homes and businesses. Accurately tracking and understanding these issues is essential for maintaining a clean, safe urban environment.

The long-term goal of the project is to generate an intelligent, city-wide heat map of Bristol. By aggregating and analysing thousands of user-submitted reports, the system will highlight hotspots, uncover trends, and equip councils, community groups, and residents with clear insights needed to prioritise clean-up efforts.
